Video of The Month: “Dreams”

30 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 20 Comments

While this month was a relatively good month in terms of music videos, with great contributions from The Boy Least Likely To (I still don’t know if that was 2005 or 2006, but whatever), Maximo Park, and Kanye West (though it seems that one will never be released), but it took until the month’s final days for us to get a true “video of the month”, which will be a new monthly feature considering the apparent popularity of music videos on this site. January’s video of the month comes courtesy of TV On The Radio and director Elliot Jokelson, who teamed up for the second time with TVotR after the two collaborated on 2004’s incredible video for “Staring At The Sun” (also check out GWFAS’ #8 video of 2005, Jokelson’s clip for Pinback’s “Fortress” - follow link to watch/stream).In this video, a Easter Island-esque (only a lot meaner/scarier looking) head descends from the clouds on a city to more or less engage in a staring contest with a homeless man standing on top of a skyscraper (yeah, don’t ask). Another way one could summarize this video is with a simple “What the fuck?”, as that’s pretty much what’s going through the viewer’s head the entire time. However, it’s a beautifully done clip, and check out the incredible reflection rendering at about the halfway point, remarkable considering this entire video was filmed on only a $31,000 budget. Overall the video just features wonderful cinematography and photography direction, and though I haven’t quite worked out the meaning yet (does the homeless guy see himself in that floating stone head?), I’m sure it’s rich in that department as well.

Video: “Dreams” - TV On The Radio [highly recommended]

Also, in other video news, Death Cab’s newest video in the Directions series, Cat Solen’s clip for “Soul Meets Body”, aired for the first time today, and while it’s kind of boring at first, once you realize the entire thing is just form cuts and wonderful use of dynamic editing and montage; that is, cutting from shots of graphically similar objects to other structurally similar shots with featuring similar subject matter (i.e. the shot from the lamp to the flame, etc.). Also, I’m a big proponent of singing deer in music videos (and bonus points if they’re mounted on the wall), so this is a good time for that also. Watch below.

All in all, good month for videos, here were the top clips January 2006 had to offer:
1) “Dreams” - TV On The Radio [highly recommended]
2) “The Fastest Man Alive” - Sound Team [iPod Compatible]
3) “Marching Bands of Manhattan” - Death Cab (link expired)
4) “I Want You To Stay” - Maximo Park
5) “Soul Meets Body” - Death Cab

NOTE: “Heard ‘Em Say” is not technically a January ‘06 release as Kanye apparently hated Gondry’s video and refused to release it. But you can watch it here anyway, if you’d like.

GWFAS Name Dropped In The NY Times

30 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 7 Comments

Wow, so this came out of nowhere. I’m just making my usual rounds through the blogs, having just completed my rigorous Monday schedule, and I’m all “Yeah! Stereogum linked to me!”, which was cool and all, and I called Evro and we’re all happy and excited and whatnot. But upon further review I realized that their link was an excerpt from the unfortunately-named New York Times, in which Laura Sinagra wrote about the rise in availability of music videos on the web, and linked to me (as well as DoCopenhagen - only she misspelled “Copenhagan”), even going as far as to devote two full sentences to the site in which she wrote:

“…the unfortunately named GoodWeatherForAirstrikes.com describes each of its 65 top videos and aims for total iPod compatibility. The site’s list also gets points for including the Mary Poppins-like take on Feist’s “Mushaboom” directed by Patrick Daughters, and Lily Thorne’s video for Bright Eyes’s “Easy/Lucky/Free,” which plays on Conor Oberst’s “new Dylan” reputation.”

If Ms. Sinagra is reading, I’d like to overlook (for this sentence only) the shot at the awesome name of this site (she just wishes the New York Times had a cooler name), and thank her profusely, and if she ever needs a hug and some hot cocoa there’s always an open door at 231 Woody dorm at the University of Virginia*. However, regarding the shot at this site’s title, Everett points out that “they just don’t understand the subtle homage to the greatest band currently making music [Sigur Ros], thus our indie cred is still above the New York Times”. Anyway though, this is exciting and my day has been sufficiently made, and for those who want to read the full article, go here to do so (who’d have thought I’d get mentioned in an article titled “Texas History and Presidential Rock”?). If you’re in the mood to celebrate, head on over to Palms Out Sounds, where you can download Diplo’s remix of the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs single, “Gold Lion” (though the actual unremixed single is yet to surface).

ALSO: Finally, the first of The Raconteurs (the collaboration between Jack White and Brendan Benson) new material has been made available for streaming at the band’s website (and if you’re into legalities you can download mp3s of the two songs over at You Ain’t No Picasso).

* I mean this literally - my room mate Dan thinks it’s awesome to leave the door to the room wide open at all times, thus making it possible for the RA to walk by and see the bottle of vodka in my closet last friday, which you know, didn’t go over so well… he also left the door open over all of Winter Break, which was cool and safe I guess… sorry, rant over.

EVERETT’S UPDATE: We here at Good Weather for Airstrikes are unbelievably excited about this news, and I figured there is no better way to have you, the readers, share in our happiness than by giving you more downloadable content. So, as Derek stated above, the title of the article in which our humble website was mentioned is “Texas History and Presidential Rock”. Below, you will find five songs that immediately came to mind when I heard that phrase. Enjoy!

Spoon, The Way We Get By
Of course one of the more famous Texas indie bands gets a spot on the presitigious list of “Bands I Think Of In A Good Way When I Think Of Texas”.

Explosions In The Sky, To West Texas
Another band on the aforementioned list, hitting the triple whammy with a song that has Texas in the title AND comes from a movie based in Texas (Friday Night Lights).

Ben Kweller, Commerce, TX
A nice segue from Texas, the state, to what our current President is interested in (or interested in destroying, depending on your political leanings): commerce. Hooray economy, and yay for its decline!

Bright Eyes, When The President Talks To God (Live from Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club)
I am sure you’ve all heard this song (unless you hate Bright Eyes blah blah save it), so I tried to sweeten the deal by using this version, which is somewhat of a rarity compared to the free iTunes single and the live cut from Motion Sickness.

The Knack, My Sharona
Finally, the song that Mr. Bush gives some rotation on his iPod, a little taste of the “hardcore” our President enjoys (with a healthy helping of “honky tonk”).

So there are your songs, and again, thanks to all you readers for making this website worth writing for. We do it for you, not just for NY Times ego boosts. Thanks for the support. Unrelatedly, if you like this site, you’ll probably also enjoy All Things Go.

Artist Profile: Phones

28 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 6 Comments

Back before GWFAS got all caught up in Best of 2005 mode, I had made it a goal to feature more electronic artists on the site, as I feel that the electronic genre is somewhat underrepresented in much of the blogosphere. My first feature profiled electronic juggernauts Royksopp, but now I’d like to draw attention to another element of electronic music: remixing. While I’ve always enjoyed remixes, they often merely provide filler material on single releases and mildly interesting b-side fodder. However, recently I’ve discovered two remixers who can seemingly do no wrong: Phones and MSTRKRFT. I’ll be featuring MSTRKRFT in my next post, but for now I’ll be profiling Phones, my favorite remix artist.

Phones is the remixing pseudonym of Paul Epworth, who moonlights as the UK’s hottest producer. Epworth has turned in near-flawless production jobs for Maximo Park, Tom Vek, The Futureheads, and most of all Bloc Party. Though Epworth’s first love is production, he’s also been remixing and recording his own music since the age of 17. However, shortly after forming a band he “realised that the studio was the pinnacle of musical creativity, the place where the imagined becomes material… [and he] set about learning the laws, understanding the principles, and disregarding most of them in favour of instinct”. Phones is the name he works under remixing the songs of bands he’s produced, and according to his site, all remixes are created in 8 hours or less on his Apple laptop, and he hopes “they are as fun to dance to as they were to make”. This post will be a long one, but not enough can be said about Phones’ mastery of the songs he remixes.

Many of you are probably familiar with his “Banquet (Disco Edit)”, as it appeared as the final track on Bloc Party’s debut Bloc Party EP, but Phones has created even more incredible masterpieces for the likes of Tom Vek and The Futureheads. Like no other remixer, Phones completely reinvents the tracks to the point that they frequently can’t even be compared to the original. For example, at times I’m tempted to say that his “Hounds Of Love (Wolves At The Door Mix)”, which clocked in as GWFAS’ #3 remix of 2005, surpasses The Futureheads’ original (which I know seems impossible), but the two are so different that comparison is futile. On his “Wolves At The Door Mix”, Phones isolates The Futureheads’ a capella yelps and then surrounds them by synthesizer squiggles, computer glitches, and all around techno-pop glory, turning the blissful original into a dancefloor masterpiece.

On his “I Ain’t Saying My Goodbyes (12″ Version)” he actually improves on Tom Vek’s original, turning it into a grinding industrial beast of a song. He leads you along with whirrs and bleeps behind Vek’s vocals until the 1:22 mark when all of a sudden the beat falls out and he hits you with the song’s vicious guitar riff, alternating the call-and-return guitars between the left and right speakers, in a moment of sheer visceral hotness. Phones also remixes Vek’s “Nothing But Green Lights”, transplanting onto it a driving percussion section and focuses everything on that twinkly-swirly-keyboard noise that makes the original so great, before dropping it like it’s hot at the 3:36 mark and adding a catchy-ass keys line (NOTE: I actually have no idea what instrument makes that twinkly/swirly noise but it’s awesome).

Epworth’s latest production project has been for White Rose Movement’s Kick, to be released in March, featuring hit singles “Love Is A Number” and “Alsatian”. The latter gets the Phones remixing treatment, and he takes the danceable original and well, just makes it more danceable, adding jarring percussion and all kinds of synthesized bells and whistles. I’ll be doing an artist profile on White Rose Movement themselves soon, as they’ve got a good deal of the next-big-thing/UK hype band potential that I love.

Phones also turns in decent efforts for The Rake’s “Retreat” and Annie’s “Heartbeat”, but a decent Phones remix is still better than 75% of other remixes out there. Download the best of Phones remix work below, organized from top to bottom in order of most highly recommended to least highly recommended, but all are highly recommended nonetheless.

Michel Gondry Directs New Video For Kanye

27 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 6 Comments

Michel Gondry, arguably the best video director of all time and one of the greatest cinematic minds of the last 20 years, proves he’s still got it (not that there was ever any question) with his latest playful clip for Kanye West’s “Heard ‘Em Say”. Though the song has already seen two previous video incarnations, this should do a grand job of supplanting both whn it hits airwaves in the coming weeks. This has been floating around the internet for nearly a month now, but has yet to see an official release, thus it was excluded from my Top 65 Videos list.

Though not on par with the masterpieces Gondry has directed for The Chemical Brothers (”Star Guitar”) and The White Stripes (”Fell In Love With A Girl” and “Hardest Button To Button”), his video for “Heard ‘Em Say” is more of the Gondry magic we’ve come to know and love. In the clip, Kanye and three adorable kids play sidewalk baggers who are invited in from the rain by a kind-hearted security guard (that guy from Maroon 5) to spend a night of magic inside Macy’s. This certainly won’t be one of the best of the year, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless, and it’s worth watching if for no other reason than the fact that it’s Gondry.

Below is the video for download, which you can get in both high-resolution QT format or in iTunes/iPod-compatible .mp4 format (20.6 MB).

All Things Go, All Things Go

27 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 3 Comments

My high-school soulmates over at All Things Go have begun to post their individual top 10 mixes, and I definitely recommend you head over there and check it out. They’re a great (not to mention adorable!) group of guys with a nice eclectic blend of music tastes, and you’re guaranteed to find something you like over there. I’ve got to draw attention to two of the picks on their lists, as they’re possibly-unheard and actually incredible songs that you all need to give a listen to.

First of all, from Adrian’s list, was Brand New’s “Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t”, which is firmly entrenched in my top five songs of all time. I’m not kidding, this is actually - according to my calculations - my third favorite song of all time (behind only “Such Great Heights” and “Banquet”), but I’m sure many of you passed up the chance to listen to it due to the crippling “emo” tag that Brand New’s been forced to drag around. Just because The Notwist started out as a German hardcore band doesn’t mean people still pass them off as shitty German hardcore, does it? So why should Brand New be any different? Let’s get evolved here, people. These are some of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard, please give it a listen, and let me know what you think in the comments.

“Okay I Believe You…” - Brand New [highly highly recommended]

Secondly, Austin, who remains a consistent source of new music for me, included Mew’s incredible “Am I Wry? No” on his ten-song mix, and I’m afraid nowhere near enough people have experienced this song. Yes, it’s an experience. It open with this industrial whirring-type noise, then all of a sudden you’re full on assaulted by heavenly bliss. At the 27-second mark of the song, some of the most blissful and epic guitar riffs I’ve ever heard emerge like audible rays of sunlight, and you know you should clear out your schedule because your life’s about to get changed. Lead singer Jonas Bjerre’s (yeah, it’s a guy, I was shocked too) shrill vocals are a bit off-putting at first, and some might like this song better if it were purely instrumental, but I still have to demand that this be listened to. Optimized listening suggestions: turn out the light, get comfortable, alter your consciousness (optional, depending on how you roll), either close your eyes or turn on the iTunes visualizer, and get taken to a dreamworld of magic (Chris Parnell-approved). Also, check out “Treehouse” by I’m From Barcelona, an amazing track I hadn’t heard before, as well as the Adam Arcuagi song he posted over there, which is pure, unaldultered and unsigned indie goodness. Enjoy:

New Maximo Park Video: “Stay”

27 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 2 Comments

For the final single off of their debut album, A Certain Trigger, Maximo Park will be releasing “I Want You To Stay”, which is fantastic and all, but I personally would have gone with “Picture of a Postcard”. However, that’s neither here nor there, as the main point of this post is to bring to your attention the group’s new video for the aforementioned new single.

Director Ramon Bloomberg directs an intriguing and well-shot clip for the song, but unfortunately I can’t say that it really adds much to the song or even flows with the music. I love the cinematography and lighting here, which is similar to the lighting found in Maximo’s previous videos, as well as the catacomb setting, and the mysteriously limping man is somewhat intriguing, but ultimately the feeling of the song and message of the video don’t really go together at all (yeah, that’s a run-on sentence, what of it?). As seems to be the consensus on antville, this would have worked much better on it’s own as a short film or maybe as a video for a different song, but despite the great atmosphere and setting, the video lacks cohesion with the song. One saving grace is the final scene of the video, in which the man watches himself getting beaten up by a mob of men in black trenchcoats, where the “You’re always my reminder” lyric works well with the action, as does the frenetic lighting and chaotic editing. Anyway, the video still maintains (for the most part) the high standard set by Maximo Park’s previous videos on this album, and is worth downloading regardless.

Directions: “Marching Bands of Manhattan”

27 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 0 Comments

As I described in my last post, Death Cab’s new Directions video project began on Monday with the first video airing, for the opening track of the album (and my personal favorite song on Plans), “Marching Bands of Manhattan”. I’ve also recently been informed that the videos, which will be rolling out one by one on the first day of every week, will be formally released by Atlantic on a DVD in April, which is absolutely fantastic news.

Regarding the first video though, it was directed by long-time album cover designer (who has designed more than 50 album covers) and sometime video director Paul Brown, and is a great clip for the song. It starts of slow and takes a little while to get going, but I love the shrinking dematerializing walls effect Brown uses to transition from the room to the beach, and it goes perfectly with the feel of the song. Next up will be Cat Solen’s video for “Soul Meets Body”, so keep an eye out for that on January 30th.

Unfortunately the videos are only streaming Quicktime at this point, so I can’t offer them up here for download, but rest assured I’ll have them up here once the DVD is released in April. I’m also including a link to where you can stream the 2-minute trailer for the Directions project, in which the band introduces the project and you can see brief clips of all of the videos. I’m particularly intrigued by the one with the kids dressed up as businessmen and women, but that’s probably just because apparently, according to the Sigur Ros forums regarding my Top 65 Music Videos post, I have a fixation on children. But for now, the streaming links:

Album Spotlight: Cat Power’s “The Greatest”

25 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

I admit that I am not the greatest fan of Cat Power, though there are definitely a few songs here or there (most notably “Names”, from You Are Free) that I’ve enjoyed. Once I heard the leaked lead single and title track from her just-released new album, however, I was properly intrigued and vowed to make an effort to listen to the whole thing. Well, I’ve made good on that vow and given The Greatest a chance, and I’m glad I did. Immediately memorable is the aforementioned lead single/title track/first song, “The Greatest”, which is a remarkable song in which Chan Marshall refuses to have her strong lyrics and vocals overshadowed by a truly heartrending piano-and-strings arrangement. A strong case could be made that this album is worth the purchase price for this song alone, but it is hardly the only good song on The Greatest. The sparse ballad “Where Is My Love” showcases Marshall’s stunning voice on top of a mellow background, a striking centerpiece to the album [note: Pitchfork completely disagrees with me here]. Another excellent song is “Lived In Bars”, which features saxophone and other jazz staples in the background to the gorgeous chorus. As a whole, the song is very reminiscent of “The Greatest”, indeed one of the only drawbacks to this album is the similarities between a lot of the songs. Marshall tries gamely to vary the arrangements and the affect in her voice, and to a degree she succeeds in keeping the album interesting. The big story behind this album is that it was recorded in Memphis and the backup musicians are renowned bluesy session players, which is enough to build intrigue and definitely affect (mostly in a positive fashion) the songs on this album. Overall, however, The Greatest is not a challenging album; its consistency falls just short of being a fault. “The Greatest” is, without irony, the greatest song on an album that across the board is simply, ‘good’.

Album Preview: The Elected’s “Sun Sun Sun”

23 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 3 Comments

Rilo Kiley’s two main performers both have solo albums coming out tomorrow. Jenny Lewis’ solo debut Rabbit Fur Coat has definitely received it’s fair share of discussion, and deservedly so. I believe, however, that it is unfair how little attention is being paid to the second release by a Rilo Kiley member slated for January 24: The Elected’s Sun, Sun, Sun. The Elected is the side project of Rilo Kiley’s Blake Sennett, who recorded much of this album while on the road with Rilo Kiley. The Rilo Kiley influence hardly dominates the album, however, as Sennett mostly takes a more country-tinged approach to his songs. Sennett has a nicely hushed voice and a penchant for writing great pop songs that incorporate gentle, folky americana; Sun, Sun, Sun is a very consistent album with next to no filler and a few standout tracks (I say “next to” no filler because the first and last tracks are under one minute and serve as an ‘intro’ and ‘outro’ that, though pretty, largely fail to further the album). One notable song is the soulful throwback “Did Me Good”, where Sennett turns up the volume and adds some brass and jazzy guitar; another strong track is “Fireflies In A Steel Mill”, Derek’s personal favorite song from the album. Also available for download is the over-seven-minute epic “Biggest Star”, which is the last “song” on the album (there is a 40+ second outro). Overall, Sennett’s sophomore release as The Elected is an interesting and conscious departure from the Rilo Kiley sound; Sennett boldly walks in to alt-country territory and stakes his claim as one of the sub-genres strongest pop songwriters. Sun, Sun, Sun is a very solid release, definitely deserving of my recommendation, and I further add that you purchase the physical album when it’s released because, as you can see from the above image, the cover art is gorgeous.

New Shins, Death Cab & Bloc Party News + MP3s

22 January 2006 | posted in Uncategorized | 10 Comments

So now that all the excitement and stress surrounding the music videos post is mostly behind us, here’s a big round up of what’s been going on since I last made a non-Best of 2005 post.NEW SHINS SONG(S)!
As most of you probably already know, The Shins are currently readying their newest album, which according to frontman James Mercer, will apparently be called either Wincing The Night Away or Sleeping Lessons, for release sometime this summer. The Shins aim to have the album completed and turned into Sub Pop by April 1st, which, with the state of the internet these days, will hopefully mean we’ll see a leak of the album shortly thereafter. Anyway, one song rumored to be on the album is “Won Too Many Fights” which has been floating around on the internet for a while in the form of a James Mercer solo performance from The Moonshine Festival. However, another live version of a song that’s supposedly on the album has recently surfaced from one of the band’s live performances on their recent Australian tour, recorded live on January 7th at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne. The new song is apparently currently untitled, but there are rumors that it’s actually called “Circus Walk”. Though Mercer has made it sound like the new album will introduce a new sound for the band (he’s compared some of the songs to old My Bloody Valentine and even Fugazi), these songs, though only early live versions, are more of the same old Shins we know and love. Check it out below.

MP3: “Won One Too Many Fights” - The Shins
MP3: “Untitled (Circus Walk)” - The Shins“NEW” DEATH CAB SONG! (AND NEW VIDEO PROJECT!)
While this song’s not exactly new per se, as it’s been available as a b-side on the vinyl release of Plans since October, this is the first time I’ve ever found an mp3 recording of the song, which I’ve been looking for since first hearing the song on my vinyl LP of Plans. While it’s certainly not one of the best songs DCFC’s ever produced, it’s on par if not better than some of the songs on Plans (namely “Your Heart Is An Empty Room” and “Someday You Will Be Loved”), and would have been one of the more uptempo songs (think along the lines of “Sound of Settling” and “Crooked Teeth”) on the album had it made the official release.

Also, I just realized Death Cab’s Directions video series begins tomorrow, and I’m ridiculously excited. Not only are Death Cab about to release a new “old school, stop motion” music video for their next single “Crooked Teeth” (directed by Ace Norton), they’ll also be releasing a music video for every single song on the album, including b-side “Talking Like Turnstiles”, which as I’ve already mentioned, you should download below. Also, Norton’s video for “Crooked Teeth” will not be featured on the compilation, nor will Jon Watts’ video for “Soul Meets Body”. Rather, the two new videos will be made for those songs, by Cat Solen (”Crooked Teeth”), who directed GWFAS’ 65th best video of 2005 for Bright Eyes’ “At The Bottom of Everything”, and Rob Schrab (”Soul Meets Body”). The complete list of whose directing what is available below, and the first of the videos is set to be released on Death Cab’s website tomorrow:

  • “Marching Bands of Manhattan,” directed by P.R. Brown
  • “Soul Meets Body,” directed by Cat Solen
  • “Summer Skin,” directed by Lightborne
  • “Different Names for the Same Thing,” directed by Autumn de Wilde
  • “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” directed by Monkmus
  • “Your Heart Is an Empty Room,” directed by Jeffrey Brown; animated by Eliza Kinkz
  • “Someday You Will Be Loved,” directed by Ace Norton
  • “Crooked Teeth,” directed by Rob Schrab
  • “What Sarah Said,” directed by Laurent Briet
  • “Brothers on a Hotel Bed,” directed by Chris Grismer
  • “Stable Song,” directed by Aaron Stewart-Ahn
  • “Talking Like Turnstiles”, directed by Lance Bangs

NEW FLAMING LIPS SINGLE!
I’ve never been the biggest fan of The Flaming Lips, outside of their obvious hits like “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1″ and whatnot, but I’m enjoying their new single “The W.A.N.D.” off of their upcoming album, At War With The Mystics (see full tracklist here). As I said, I’ve never been much of a fan of the Lips, so I can’t really compare it too well to their older material, but it basically just rides a nice dirty guitar riff for 3 minutes and 43 seconds to great success, a la We Are Scientists. Not their most ambitious offering, but enjoyable still.

MP3: “The W.A.N.D.” - The Flaming LipsNEW BLOC PARTY-RELATED NEWS!
Bloc Party’s DVD, God Bless Bloc Party, was released last Tuesday, and though I haven’t had the time to watch it yet, I’m immensely excited to. The DVD contains both a documentary featuring “interviews, backstage footage, and blistering live performances” as well as the band’s complete live festival performance at Belaforte, France from July 2005. Though I haven’t watched it yet, I went ahead and ripped the Belaforte performance, which clocks in at about 20 minutes, into iPod-compatible .mp4 format. In the live set the band performs “Like Eating Glass”, “Banquet”, “Blue Light”, “Luno”, and “Little Thoughts”, and it’s quite nice really. Someone could tell Gordy to put a little emotion into the performance though. Seriously, he needs to lighten the fuck up, he’s even a downer in the picture above.

In other Bloc Party-related news, experimental electronic-folk duo Tunng have decided to release their brilliant cover of Bloc Party’s “The Pioneers”, which has been floating around the internet for a while now, as a single/EP to tide fans over until they release their second album later this year. This marks the second time “The Pioneers” has been wonderfully covered, after Mystery Jets covered the song for a b-side on Bloc Party’s “The Pioneers” single, which can also be downloaded below. Tunng, which is comprised of Mike Lindsay and Sam Genders, strip down the herky-jerky guitars and urgency of the original in exchange for more laid-back electronic strumming. Does the guitar that comes in at about the 3:20 mark after the chorus remind anyone else of ska? No? Just me? That’s cool too. Anyway, feel free to download both covers below.

Finally, Divide & Kreate dropped one of the hottest mash ups of 2005 on the unsuspecting public when they released “Somebody Stole Your Beat”, which mashed up an instrumental of Bloc Party’s immaculate “Banquet” with an acapella of The Killers’ “Somebody Told Me”. This most holy union of two awesome songs only results in further awesomeness (most eloquent phrasing ever), so I must [highly recommend] you grab this one.

Finally, I’d like to draw some attention to some brand new blogs started by a couple of my friends. First, my good friend Daniel J. Tyler has started a great new blog, The Truth Hanging From The Door, which has some great stuff for you guys to check out, especially considering the short period of time the blog’s been in existence.

Last, but certainly not least our dear friend and M3-contributor Zack Friendly has grown too big for his britches and now has a spin-off blog, All Things Go, run by him and his four BFFs Adrian, Austin, Ryan, and Alex Houston. Though I don’t know much of Ryan and Alex’s tastes, I can personally attest to the excellent quality of Zack, Adrian, and especially Austin’s eclectic tastes. Though you might not be able to identify with all of their widely-varied styles, you’re guaranteed to find something you like over there. Best of all, Zack, being the stand-up guy that he is, is letting me use some of his ezarchive hosting However, unlike From The Door, which has been rolling for a little while now, All Things Go is just getting started and only has some introductory posts up, so be sure to check back in the coming days/weeks and I’ll link to them again once their more substantive posts start popping up. Also, I designed the headers for both of those sites (though From The Door’s having some formatting issues so the header is not displayed), which are can be seen above, so I guess that’s a bonus if you enjoy my art (also: if you really enjoy my work, go here to check out the rest of my artwork).
