Michel Gondry Directs New Video For Kanye
Michel Gondry, arguably the best video director of all time and one of the greatest cinematic minds of the last 20 years, proves he’s still got it (not that there was ever any question) with his latest playful clip for Kanye West’s “Heard ‘Em Say”. Though the song has already seen two previous video incarnations, this should do a grand job of supplanting both whn it hits airwaves in the coming weeks. This has been floating around the internet for nearly a month now, but has yet to see an official release, thus it was excluded from my Top 65 Videos list.
Though not on par with the masterpieces Gondry has directed for The Chemical Brothers (”Star Guitar”) and The White Stripes (”Fell In Love With A Girl” and “Hardest Button To Button”), his video for “Heard ‘Em Say” is more of the Gondry magic we’ve come to know and love. In the clip, Kanye and three adorable kids play sidewalk baggers who are invited in from the rain by a kind-hearted security guard (that guy from Maroon 5) to spend a night of magic inside Macy’s. This certainly won’t be one of the best of the year, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless, and it’s worth watching if for no other reason than the fact that it’s Gondry.
Below is the video for download, which you can get in both high-resolution QT format or in iTunes/iPod-compatible .mp4 format (20.6 MB).

Hmm, didn’t like that video at all (but thanks for linking, obviously). I’d be really annoyed if I went into buy one of those beds the next day and the sheets had muddy footprints all over them.

Kanye West hates this video and had it remade! Seriously! Check it out in his new Entertainment Weekly cover story. The writer hated it - thought it was schmaltz. I think it’s kind of clever and it does make a point.

This is the worst Gondry video I’ve ever seen - kudos to Mr. West for pulling the plug on it. (In fact, I’m amazed he ever agreed to coming out of the cardboard box with the kids…)

I wasn’t crazy about this video. While there were some great visuals, it just lacked many of the things that make Gondry’s videos so great.
Dan - Gondry played drums on “Diamonds From Sierra Leone.”
