Bettie Serveert: “Lover I Don’t Have To Love”
Those of you who caught last night’s steamy episode of The OC ears’ may have perked up upon recognizing the familiar chord progression of one of the song’s that provided a recurring soundtrack for the episode. At first I wasn’t quite sure if it was a cover, thinking it might possibly be an instrumental rip-off of Bright Eyes’ original, but when the vocals came in in the episode’s final third it became apparent that it was in fact a cover of the Conor Oberst classic. Specifically, Dutch indie-rock group Bettie Serveert’s cover of “Lover I Don’t Have To Love” from the band’s 2005 release, Attagirl. I loved the instrumental (which is all that was played for the first half of the show), and though I was at first put off by the female vocals and lead singer Carol van Dijk’s worn voice, having heard the song in its entirety in mp3-form, I quite like it. Granted, it’s not on par with the original, but that’s to be expected, and Bettie Serveert delivers a faithful cover here.

this band is absolutely shit hot…and one of my favorite bands…and i’m an ancient 50 yrs old. definitely you should check them out and i’d welcome any links to live bettie serveert…i’ve got everything else they’ve done.
highly recommended is the Velvet Underground cover album they did. also check out Palomine. I lust after Carol van Dyck. one of the great female rock voices.
