Muse To Release New Single In June
My favorite arena-rockers, Muse, who put on one of the ten best live shows I’ve ever witnessed when I saw them two years ago at the 9:30 Club in DC, have just announced the details of their comeback single, “Supermassive Black Hole”, which will be out June 19th in the UK (and way before that on the blogs, I imagine). Their as-yet-untitled fourth album will follow on July 3rd, and though no US release date has been confirmed, I imagine we shouldn’t have to wait too long, as Muse achieved mild success and radio play with Absolution in the US the last time around. Singer Matt Bellamy, who consistently manages to sound absolutely flawless live, hinted at a shift in sound for Muse, saying:
“I was going out dancing in clubs around New York. That helped create tracks like ‘Supermassive Black Hole’. Franz [Ferdinand] have done it very well, with that dance type beat going on mixed with alternative guitar and I’ve always wanted to find that.”
So, considering my undying love for dance rock, I’m definitely looking forward to hearing this. While unfortunately I don’t have their upcoming single for you (yet), I do have two of Muse’s pre-Absolution singles, their two finest songs in my opinion, which could easily have been overlooked by you American readers, seeing as Origin of Symmetry didn’t see a US release until long after Absolution came out here. “New Born” (awesome intro) and “Bliss” (check out that piano/synth line) are my two favorite Muse songs, so hopefully some of you non-UK folk will discover them for the first time and enjoy them as much as I do.

Everything about this post makes me happy. I read about the new Muse single this morning, and I’m on pins and needles for it. I was also at that 9:30 club show, and it blew me away. I hope that you got the chance to see them when they returned and played at the University of Maryland. In more than 70 shows, I can safely say that THAT Muse show was the best concert I’ve ever been to in my entire life. Watching Matt Bellamy was a completely transcendent experience. I got to meet him and Chris afterwards, and Matt had to ask me to repeat what I was saying to him because I could barely speak. He was really nice, but I was intimidated. And I think my eardrums were permanently runined that night. It was worth it. New Born and Bliss - 2 of my all time favorites along with Megalomania, and I’m also into the b-side Eternally Missed. Good stuff. Looking forward to when they come back to DC.

I’m happy to read about Muse too - HUGE fan - unfortunately only seen the wonder of Muse live via the internet (i don’t know if you know about the website muselive.com - tons of bootlegs of live performances - i recomment earl’s court on the 20th). Can’t wait for the single - in case you don’t know - It will be played on BBC on May 8th - so hopefully someone will get that out for us.
I’m not a big fan of Bliss - all about Citizen Erased, New Born, and Sunburn.

Their show in Los Angeles was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen and they moved up on the list of my all-time favorite bands. I went and bought everything, including Origins of Symmetry after that.

Aw man, I love Muse. I was fortunate enough to see them when I was out in LA in 2004, and they’re a powerhouse live. So glad to hear they’ve got new material coming out later this year.

They still sound like a Poor Man’s Radiohead to me…

I’m a big fan of them and Radiohead too and Matt’s doesn’t sound anything like Thom Yorke.

hello non-uk muse lovers, this blog is a joy to read for me, too. i first saw muse a few years ago in belfast- they are amazing live. also, i’ve heard the new single, very different to muse’s usual direction. after numerous listenings i can conclude that it grows on you! it was leaked on the net yesterday. However, it is being released on iTunes UK tomorrow (i think) so i expect you’ll be able to find it on blogs or other fansites after then.

I’m a huge Muse fan (saw them twice in Vancouver, and they were the best shows I’ve been to out of about 30 concerts), however I really, really don’t like the new single.
However, some of the recordings that were going around last year (debase mason’s grog, crying shame) were really good. I am basically crossing my fingers that Supermassive Black Hole is an oddity on the new album.

Can’t wait - although having heard the new single live I have my doubts. All I can say is that I had reservations about all of their previous material - but like a fine wine it just gets better with age! Even the Radiohead similarities wear off if you give them enough time. The influence is clear, especially on the vocals, but Matt has made the style completely his own. Can’t wait to see them at Reading in August!
