New Annie Single: “Crush”

So Annie’s new single, which is incidentally the first song she ever wrote and the first track released from her much anticipated and as-yet-untitled sophomore album, dropped an entire month ago, yet somehow it’s gone overlooked by more or less the entire blogosphere. I’m going to try to do my best to change that, because while it doesnt quite reach the standard of perfection set by 2004’s “Heartbeat” and “Chewing Gum”, it’s still a great, albeit very different, single for her. However, there’s some confusion surrounding it, as the 12″ released by Dim Mak comes with two mixes of the track, courtesy of And The Left Handed and Richard X, both of which come listed as the “original version”. The Richard X version is the one that warrants the “very different sound” description two sentences ago, as it throws out all the electropop whimsy of Richard X’s other Annie tracks (see: “Chewing Gum”) in favor of jangly, chugging guitars and a more organic indie-rock sound. The And The Left Handed version, which is the one I’m preferential to, stays much truer to Annie’s established electronic sound and as far as I can tell is technically the official single version of the song, as it’s this version that I saw her play at Intonation and it’s this one that originally leaked. Or maybe it’s not, I’m confused, but it’s a great track either way and I’d definitely recommend checking both versions out below.
