Explosions In The Sky: The Rescue EP
Explosions In The Sky are a chill-out favorite over here at the Good Weather For Airstrikes camp; Everett lives and dies by EITS when it comes to essay-writing music, and I live by the band when it comes to getting-high-and-walking-around music. Regardless of who you are though, chances are you’re gonna get the shit soothed out of you if you listen to any of the group’s releases. While Explosions’ two major releases, 2001’s The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place and 2003’s Those Who Tell The Truth, were on the receiving end of fairly unanimous critical acclaim, the group also has two lesser-known releases under their belt; their 2000 debut album, How Strange, Innocence, which saw a re-release last October, and The Rescue EP, which saw a subscription-only release on the band’s Temporary Residence Ltd. label last year. Fortunately for those of us non-subscribers (i.e. pretty much everyone), Explosions have chosen to make The Rescue available for download online in its entirety completely free, so scroll down and get your download on below.
The concept behind The Rescue is an interesting one, as the band decided to forgo the long-and-drawn out writing and recording process normally undergone on their records in favor of a quick, song-a-day formula. That is, the guys entered the studio with nary a pre-planned riff or melody and wrote and recorded a song from scratch every day for eight days, and then spent the next six days mixing and producing the tracks, thus bringing the total production time for the EP to a mere two weeks. All of the songs are downloadable below, and be sure to go here to see what the band had to say (about a paragraph of interesting insight on each song) about what went into recording each song. Props to Adrian from All Things Go for tipping me off on this one.

In even more good news for Explosions fans, the band have announced that they’ve finished writing their next album. From the most recent post on their website:
…we can now say that we have completely finished writing our next album. It has six songs, ranging from three to thirteen minutes each. The artwork, again by Esteban Rey, is also nearly finished. In August, we will be going to Minnesota to record the album with John Congleton, and if all goes well, we’re hoping to release the album in February. Then we will re-discover our van and begin touring.
February can’t come soon enough.
