Could it be this band called “The Northern Two.” I saw them a few months back at a Club Violaine show in Chinatown LA. Here’s their Myspace page. The song isn;t listed unfortunately.
September 5th, 2006 at 6:53 pm
not the postal service
September 5th, 2006 at 6:54 pm
That remix is surpsingly good. The probably-not-Postal Service track reminds me of Treewolf.
September 5th, 2006 at 7:03 pm
I’m the one that ripped the tracks in question (there are seven in total, 3 of which Ben Gibbard is present on, 4 of which he is souly responsible for mixing the track.) The singer in question is Jimmy(James) from Dntel, who lately has been working with Ben Gibbard on the Postal Service project. If you listen to the chorus of that song you will hear Jenny Lewis on backup (Circa; Rilo Kiley/Postal Service “Give Up”)
September 5th, 2006 at 7:04 pm
On a side note - I received the demos in the mail today from a valid source (radio dj) from the UK.

sorry… that voice is not jimmy… he’s a friend of mine, and that sounds nothing like his singing or speaking voice. the instrumentation is vaguely like something he might write, but sounds much more like a cheap ripoff.

Regardless of whether it is actually the Postal Service (which is somewhat irrelevant to me), I like the track. . Thanks for the song.

[…] Oldham (aka BPB) has a new album, The Letting Go, out Sept. 19th. Pre-order it at Amazon. And on a totally random note, there may or may not be a new Postal Service track leaked at Good Weather for Airstrikes. Man crushes and crippling homesickness? Don’t get the wrong idea people, I’m married. To a woman. […]
September 6th, 2006 at 10:13 am
Sine it’s not Tamborello who is the singer (obviously). Why are you saying that he is?
It sounds nothing like him!

This interview was posted Sept 5th, he makes it sound as if they’ve not began. Of course it could be an old interview, but…
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/37977/Interview_Interview_Jimmy_Tamborello
Pitchfork: Is there anything happening with the Postal Service now?
JT: We’re trying to work on some stuff. We’re talking about wanting to finish an album sometime next year. We have to work with Death Cab’s schedule.
I definitely want to do another one.
September 6th, 2006 at 1:11 pm
i work with the band and can say with absolute certaintly that this is not The Postal Service. The quote from Ben is even incorrect. The Postal Service is Jimmy and Ben. Jimmy writes the beats and Ben writes the guitars and sings. Sometimes Jenny will sing. That’s the process for The Postal Service. The record is most definitely not going to be divided into thirds or any other concept type nonsense. I can tell you that at this point there are 2 songs currently in production but with Jimmy putting the finishing touches on his DNTEL record new Postal tracks have been slow coming. The record is also definitely not coming out in JAnuary. They are hoping to maybe finish recording by around then which would make this record come out in MAy or thereabouts. Whoever runs this blog should pull down this crap before more people are misled into thinking this mediocre pop song is actually by the postal service.
September 6th, 2006 at 2:07 pm
Al, I can say with absolute certainty that I’m pretty sure it is The Postal Service, but we’ll both find out soon enough. As for the quote being incorrect, I’m just quoting the interview from Echo Weekly, so don’t shoot the messenger. As far as the record coming out in January, that was an UNCONFIRMED street date, so again we’ll have to wait and see if that works out. Even if it is a confirmed date, it’ll more than likely get moved back as that’s how these things generally go (plus Sub Pop will be releasing the new Shins album the next week so I don’t know if they’d want their two biggest releases of 2007 coming out within a week of each other). Thanks for your insight into all of this, but the track will stay up until its confirmed that this is not the Postal Service.
September 6th, 2006 at 6:13 pm
wow this is the most hotly disputed event since JFK got shot!
September 6th, 2006 at 6:16 pm
either way it makes me want to listen to the postal service… this would have been a great marketing gimmick.. I’m sure Sub Pop can’t be mad at you lol… you should post some MORE postal service though… THANK YOU GW4AS!
September 6th, 2006 at 6:23 pm
I’ve got to come clean guys. Regardless of whether or not this track is real - which still hasn’t been determined - it was me who shot JFK. Sorry, for leading you on.
September 6th, 2006 at 8:34 pm
I work at Sub Pop. This is not The Postal Service. Everything that Al said earlier is correct. honestly, I can’t fathom how you could even mistake this band for the postal service let alone be so positive of your position. Rest assured you are being jerked around. Whoever fed you this track is messing with you.
September 6th, 2006 at 10:18 pm
IF this IS the postal service, then the track is awesome, considering I’m not a big fan of Tamborello’s vocals. IF IT ISN’T the Postal Service, the track is still awesome, and someone needs to find out WHO IT IS, and get them a record deal!
September 6th, 2006 at 10:19 pm
Derek - You time traveling son of a bitch. I’m impressed. Hot music and hot time traveling skills indeed.
Regardless, thanks much for the track.
September 6th, 2006 at 10:40 pm
hey tony, was that you in the new thermals video?
September 6th, 2006 at 11:18 pm
Tony, thanks for your insight. But you really can’t fathom how this could be mistaken for the Postal Service? I mean, yeah, the lack of Gibbard vocals are a dead giveaway, but whoever it is straight-up nailed the PS sound. The instrumentation is very synthpop Tamborello, regardless of whether or not it’s actually the band. However, one thing I take issue with: “[I can’t fathom how you could] be so positive of your position”? Does anything in the above post make you think I’m so positive that this is Postal Service? I mean, throughout the entire thing I say how much I’d like to find out who this actually is and reserve judgement before out-and-out declaring it a new PS track. Regardless though, thank you for your informed insight and for clearing things up.

Oooh!
Controversy abounds!
September 7th, 2006 at 7:43 am
I have absolutely no knowledge of whether this is genuinely The Postal Service or not, but I like it a lot regardless. It does sound like them, and it would make sense that if Jimmy was recording a demo he would try to put his own vocal track on (or get a session singer to do so). Given that the album will be recorded via, erm, the postal service, there are sure to be demos flying back and forward and it stands to reason that some of them will be leaked. Or it could be a brilliant marketing ploy - for The Postal Service or for a new band of imposters! Intriguing!
September 7th, 2006 at 11:06 am
Sweet track regardless. Very nice to listen to in the morning.
September 7th, 2006 at 11:44 am
Touche, Sam. I myself have flip-flopped about fifteen times on this issue, and have actually re-written the post three times to reflect this. The first draft was a wrought-with-skepticism \”there\’s no way this is the Postal Service\” piece, after seeing that article and hearing the source\’s explanation I rewrote it into a \”I\’m pretty sure this is the Postal Service\” piece, and this final draft hopefully conveys my new \”I don\’t know what\’s going on, I\’m confused as shit and stressed out, someone hold me?\” mentality.
September 7th, 2006 at 3:17 pm
ok, i have no idea how to use IRC. i found the channel, and the server, or whatever, but i have absolutely noooo ideal what to do next, or how to download anything, or …ok, let’s just say i’m completely irc-retarded.

September 7th, 2006 at 8:03 pm
this whole thing seems like a publicity stunt for that band the northern two. the track sounds a lot more like them than the postal service to me. although i will admit that the northern two definitely sounds a bit like the postal service. and it seems odd that the very first post is from someone who happens to be familiar with that band.
also for the record, i can tell you that jimmy never records scratch vocals for the postal service. he sends beats and keyboard parts to ben who then tweaks with it and adds vocals and a bit more instrumentation. then it all goes back to jimmy who messes with it some more and then maybe gets jenny to come over and add some backing vocals. that’s the process for nearly every song they’ve written. so there you go.
so how about we change the whole intro to this piece and make it clear that this is not the postal service? what do you need to hear in order to stop gossip mongering false information? are you waiting for jimmy or ben to email you? or does the band who made the song and is most likely perpetrating this hoax/publicity stunt need to come clean? seriously dude, this whole spin you’ve got going is not cool although i bet it’s generating a shitload of traffic for you…
September 7th, 2006 at 8:04 pm
That sounds nothing like the Postal Service or anything from Dntel. And this:”However, the source maintains that he has six more demos, three of which Gibbard is solely responsible for, but is unable to leak them until XFM premiers them on UK radio” is just flat out false. Ben and Jimmy would never allow a demo version of a song to “premier” on anything… ever.
Nice way to stir up controversy though.
September 7th, 2006 at 9:08 pm
Tony is 100% correct. I’m all for leaked tracks for review purposes, but this is NOT a Postal Service track. If you’re hungry for new music from Jimmy and Ben, I suggest checking out the James Figurine record and wait for the new Dntel album, or go back and pick up the early Death Cab/All Time Quarterback stuff… if you want to see how another hoax went down in 1969, check out the link on my name.
September 7th, 2006 at 9:11 pm
Alright, I\’m done with this. Way too much hate mail and too many antogonistic comments to justify further pursuing it. The track\’s still there, with the hope that someone can identify it (I don\’t care that it\’s not Postal Service at this point, I\’m just dying to find out who it actually is).
Tony, as far as bringing what you perceive as negative attention to Sub Pop and the band, I couldn\’t be more sorry about that. It was never my intention, and I even considered the ramifications keeping it up could possibly have had, but I figured the worst it could do was bring attention to the band (which, as far as I know, is never a bad thing) or conversely, if it wasn\’t them (which I now am convinced it\’s not), I thought it could get another talented (though certainly derivative) group discovered.
I never meant to slander the band or your esteemed label, and I could not possibly express my regret if you feel I\’ve done this in any way. The post has been appropriately revised, and I strongly encourage anyone who knows anything about the origin of this track to come forward and drop some knowledge on the rest of us.
Until next time, all. Blogs suck.
September 7th, 2006 at 9:34 pm
PS - I emailed The Northern Two, still awaiting a response.
September 7th, 2006 at 9:52 pm
Honestly, Derek, who gives a damn if it’s the postal service or not?! It’s an awesome track regardless, as you said.
Don’t worry about the haters. They’ll always be hatin’, they gotta, it’s in their name!
September 7th, 2006 at 11:33 pm
Daniel Stevens, please oh please for the love of God contact me. My name =link to email. Please.
I don’t see any point in arguing over this honest mistake anyway. I really dug the track, but my heart’s not broken that its not PS. I would love to eventually know who it is, however.
This isn’t ‘A Million Little Pieces’ guys.

Not a big deal… everybody loves a little controversy! Honest mistake - and dude, it kicked off a relisten to all my postal service stuff, and I relove it now
Plus I mean, Northern Two? Pretty good - clever publicity stunt, whether coordinate by them or not.
September 8th, 2006 at 3:17 am
for posterity.
the original post.
Ex-ex-exclusive, y’all. Below you will find the first of the new leaked Postal Service demos, but no, it’s not Ben Gibbard on vocals, it’s Jimmy Tamborello. You see, the new album will be divided into thirds with each band member (Tamborello, Gibbard, and Jenny Lewis) singing on a third of the album. Furthermore, each member will be writing their own lyrics and music for their respective third, and the track below is taken from Jimmy’s opening third of the album. In an interview with SpringMedia.com free press representative Corey Walkins, Gibbard confirmed that the recording process for the band’s second record is fully underway, going on to say:
“We plan on telling a story with this album. We don’t know exactly how many tracks will be on this release; but we anticipate splitting up the ownership of the album three ways. Jimmy has been working with us [(sic) Ben Gibbard, Jenny Lewis “The Postal Service”] for some time now, and will be responsible for opening the story.” (Echo Weekly)
Each part, Gibbard went on to explain, will be written completely – musically and lyrically, by the person responsible for it, thus introducing a completely new approach than that taken on the first album, 2003’s immaculate Give Up, on which Tamborello created the beats, Gibbard contributed vocals and lyrics, and Lewis chipped in with back up vocals. Thanks to Ontario’s Echo Weekly magazine who ran the original interview with Gibbard; below is your exclusive first taste of the as-yet-untitled second Postal Service album.
The album has an unconfirmed street date of January 14, 2007, which, you know, can’t possibly come soon enough. I know you’ll all call hoax due to the un-Postal Service feel of the track (I did too before hearing the explanation), but I\’m inclined to believe it\’s real.
September 8th, 2006 at 7:25 am
Ignore the hate mail, Derek. Your post encourage debate - isn’t that what blogging is all about? Okay, it might not actually be the Postal Service, but it does sound like them, and anyone who says otherwise needs their lugs checked. Thanks again for posting it!
September 8th, 2006 at 8:10 am
I’d put a considerable amount of money on it being The Northern Two.
I can’t find that supposed interview with Gibbard about the new album. Anyone know where it is?
It seems a bit too clever a promo stunt for a small myspace band with only 1800 plays though.
September 8th, 2006 at 3:09 pm
Response from the Northern Two:
“hell no, we sound way better than that!….just kidding….
nope, but youre right, thats pretty over the top postal ci
at least musically speaking…vox are no way bgibb…
thanks…though..?….lol
cheers derek,
andrew”
I didn’t really think it was them, but still dying to know who it is.

September 20th, 2006 at 11:19 pm
[…] On Sept. 5, Derek from Good Weather For AirStrikes posted what he believed to be a leaked demo from the new Postal Service album, tentatively due in the first quarter of 2007. Derek said his source had six other demos the group had been working on, which would be released after they premiered on a UK XFM station. Also posted was news on the album. Apparently Gibbard, also of Death Cab For Cutie fame, Tamborello, of Dntel, and pseudo third member Jenny Lewis, of Rilo Kiley (she did background vocals for some songs on the Service’s Give Up), were each writing, composing and recording vocals for one-third of the album, which would later be combined and arranged to form the new record. The leaked song, “The Importance of Being,” supposedly was from Tamborello’s third and therefore featured him on vocals instead of Gibbard. Of the other alleged six demos, four featured Gibbard on vocal duties while the others had Tamborello singing. Almost immediately bloggers began questioning the song’s authenticity, claiming that it sounded too sugary to be The Postal Service and that Tamborello’s voice doesn’t sound like that (click here to read the Good Weather comments discussion). And, less than a week after it was posted, SubPop Records, who manage The Postal Service, sent an e-mail to Good Weather, saying that the song was a hoax and that this “mediocre” song should be pulled. Good Weather oblieged, by removing The Postal Service as the artist from the ID3 tags, but leaving the song available to download. […]

October 3rd, 2006 at 3:46 pm
Jimmy’s music in DNTEL and postal service has much more depth, and even for a leaked copy this doesnt resemble either. Its not nearly as good, Jimmys voice is totally differant too. No.

Hello,
My name is Andrew, I’m working in European company “Bidding Expert inc”.
Bidding Expert Inc. is a unique company that provides a variety of services to buyers and sellers on the virtual auction web site eBay as well as on many online stores like Amazon, BestBuy, B&H and IBM. Bidding Expert acts as a facilitator to help make payments to third parties for purchases made on eBay and online stores. Our services fill the gap for international buyers and sellers that are unable to fully participate in e-commerce due to inefficiencies of the banking and PayPal system in their countries. The services are mainly oriented for clients from the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and Israel.
We invite citizens from other countries for cooperation. Functions of the regional agent: receiving and cashing out payments from our customers (for goods, auction items and etc.) and then transferring funds to our European clients.
If you make a decision to work with us, you’ll have to:
work no less than 2 hours per day (possibly in the evening);
check your e-mail box several times a day;
you should have opened PayPal.com account(If you don’t have one, you can register at paypal.com) because our clients buy and sell items through PayPal ;
be a legal resident in the territory of the USA or European Union;
be of maturity age.
Your commission will be equal 10% from each sale/resale operation we make!
For instance: you receive a $1000 USD to your paypal account. You withdraw the money and keep $100 (10% of $1000) for yourself. Your net income is $100. The rest of the money you transfer to our European clients by Western Union or MoneyGramm.
No special expertise or knowledge in any specific areas is needed.
You will enjoy working with us as you’ll have a real opportunity to work as an independent contractor and to earn money right from your virtual home office.
How you can apply this part time job ? It is easy as 1,2,3..
1. Please contact me by e-mail: andrew_gubert@yahoo.com, if you can`t see my e-mail on this page: andrew_gubert(@)yahoo.com
2. I will send you application form which you should fill, print, sign and send back to my e-mail.
3. You should scan and send me your ID (passport or driver licence).
Why we need your photo or scanned copy of your documents?
We needed scanned copy of your documents (you can close SSN or DL numbers) to verify that you live at current address. There are two simple reasons for this:
First of all, we have already encountered problems when manager candidates gave us the fake street addresses or the address of the neighbor. As a result the agent has stolen money.
Secondary, we do not hire people under 18. You may scan your DL or passport. It is up to you. We recommend blacking out the Social Security and Driver License numbers. There is a risk that someone else can gain access to the e-mail and steal this private information. We just need to see your full name and Full Street address on this copy.
Also we provide transactions as exchange PayPal to E-gold, Ukash, Liberty Reserve for -10%, for example: we send you paypal $1000, you should send us $900 Liberty Reserve, Ukash or e-gold.
Thank you.
