Damien Rice: “Rat Within The Grain”
I’ve definitely gone through a few Damien Rice phases over the years, and while his brand of hyper-sparse folk is less and less my thing these days, Rice’s long-awaited and breathlessly-anticipated sophomore album, 9, out November 6th in the UK and a week later in the US, is shaping up to be something truly amazing. I’m sure many of you have come across lead single “9 Crimes” by now (if not, I’ve got a single review with an excellent exclusive bonus coming over the weekend), but it’s the incredible b-side, “Rat Within The Grain” I’m posting here tonight. Perkier and of a more upbeat tempo than anything found on O while retaining the distinct vibe found on all of Rice’s material, “Rat Within The Grain” has an undeniably timeless quality about it, lending it a classic feel despite it’s relegation to b-side status. Beautiful.

Absolutely love this track.
His freshman album is wonderful and beautiful, and this preview gives me a sneak preview that htis album can live up to or be even better than “O”.

Oh, its soo good, especially, 9 Crimes, Accidental Babies and Sleep don’t weep. I’m so excited that we have some new Damo to listen to, its been far too long!!

Check out the “Other voices” programme on www.rte.ie There are a number of Rice clips plus an entire hour long special of Rice playing in Dingle in Ireland with fantastic live version of “Rat within the Grain” included. That particular clip was recorded in a pub in the town. Fantastic programme with the best of Irish and world renowned artists. Easily the best music show available free on the web.
