Brand New Brand New Brand New Brand New

Today is a pretty monumental day. Not only did the Shins new one leak this morning (”Phantom Limb” single review in the works for posting in the immediate future), but here we have Brand New’s upcoming single, “Sowing Season (Yeah)”, a song I’ve been waiting THREE FUCKING YEARS to hear. You see, Brand New’s Deja Entendu remains one of my absolute favorite albums of all time despite the fact that I’ve more or less put my emo days firmly behind me, and the interminable wait (two years without a single word of news from the band, much less a single live date) for new material has had me living by a moment (a very long moment, mind you) ever since. Seriously, as surprising as it may seem to some of you considering the typical style of music I usually post in this space, I could not be more excited to write that Brand New has announced that their long-awaited third album, titled The God And The Devil Are Raging Inside Me in typical dramatic fashion, will be released through Interscope on November 21st, and that the first single, “Sowing Season (Yeah)”, was made available for streaming on the band’s MySpace page today and was subsequently ripped by me and is available for download below. The recording is ripped directly from the band’s MySpace and is not the ever-so-slightly lower-quality radio rip with the lame promotional voiceover mid-way through that’s been circulating since last night, so enjoy it and be sure to let me know what you think of the track and I’d also just love to hear what you think of Brand New as a band in general.
MP3: “Sowing Season (Yeah)” - Brand New [webrip]
I was actually in the attendance at Brand New’s show at UVa last year (their first in two years), where they played the track live for the first time ever and it sounded AMAZING, so suffice it to say I’m psyched to finally be able to delete my shit-ass live recording in favor of the real deal, even if it is a mediocre-quality webrip. I haven’t totally made up my mind on “Sowing Season” yet, in terms of whether or not it’s an evolution of the band’s sound or just how I feel about it in general, but “Crescendofest2k6″ (as I’ve taken to calling it) is pretty exciting if for the sole reason that I finally have some new Brand New material to feast on. The song opens with a simple acoustic guitar progression and steadily builds to an intense, emotive (that’s emo for short) climax with the help of a massive, crushing chorus and the metronomic brilliance of drummer Brian Lane. But yeah, about that last emo comment - this is emo, and yes, Brand New are undeniably emo, but it’s about 1000% better than the rest of the angsty screamers out there and Deja Entendu remains one of the best straight-up rock albums of the new millenium. I mean, even Pitchfork gave it a 6.9 (that’s almost a 7!) and actually called one of the tracks (”Guernica”) “brilliant”, though when I try to trove through the P-Fork archives to find the review it’s conspicuously “not found”. Considering that the ‘Fork usually wages critical war on anything even remotely emo, a 6.9 (and a “brilliant”) is pretty eye-opening and should serve as a testament to the unwavering brilliance of that album. While their debut, Your Favorite Weapon, consisted of your typical screamy heart-purging and celebration of the joys of teenagerhood (though I still love it), Deja saw a far darker and nuanced Brand New grabbing the spotlight, and that darker edge only further manifests itself here. Earlier this year, a bushel of untitled demos (nine of them, to be exact) surfaced on the internet, and while the majority of those were cut from the album, “Untitled 08″ was reworked and blossomed into “Sowing Season”, which will be unofficially released as a single on the 21st as a bonus disc (containing non-album b-side “Coca Cola”) to come packaged with all album pre-orders. Those interested in hearing the demos should head over to All Things Go, where Adrian’s got all of them hosted, and the rest of you can proceed below to more downloadable Brand New goodness.
MP3: “Untitled 08″ - Brand New
As a bonus, I’ve got a hard to find and highly sought-after three song radio session, the only one in circulation on the internet as far as I know. The three tracks are singles “Sic Transit Gloria” and “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows”, as well as an awesome rendition of the aforementioned “Guernica”, and I’d highly recommend downloading those below for fans of Brand New thirsting for more of their material. I’ve also included the album version of “Guernica”, for those interested in hearing the song that managed to (albeit temporarily) break down Pitchfork’s wall of strict emo intolerance, as well as “Okay I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don’t”, my favorite Brand New song and one of my ten favorite songs of all time. That’s all time, people. Granted, it’s status on that list has a lot to do with the place I was in my life at the time I discovered it (i.e. high school), but even to this day it hasn’t lost its luster and stays with me, sounding just as incredible as it ever did.
Brand New Live Radio Session:
1. “Guernica” - Brand New
2. “Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades” - Brand New
3. “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows” - Brand New
Bonus MP3s:
“Guernica” - Brand New ((highly recommended))
“Okay, I Believe You…” - Brand New ((HIGHLY recommended))
Also, make a point to check out the enigmatic - and dare I say awesome - album cover for The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me here, and be sure to get yo’ pre-order on here.

Heh, any band that both Eisley and Straylight Run have supported is all right in my book. I’ll check it out, thanks.
Keep up the good work.

Brand New isn’t emo.
October 21st, 2006 at 3:26 pm
No one cares chunk.
Thanks for the awesome song. I can’t wait for the new album.

Brand New are a great thing.
I agree, they’re a genre-transcendent sort.
Thank you for the rips

I am glad to see another avid fan of Brand New, especially the fact that you recognize the lyrical brilliance that is “Okay I Believe You…” I had the honor of seeing them live in Charlotte NC, and they played an amazing show, the leaked demos that every BN fan probably has by now have been amplified to the point that adjectives fail, leaving one only to describe the things to come as ” \m/ (-_-) \m/ ”
Thank you for using your blog to spread the joy of Brand New to those who have not been fully graced by their panache. They seem to be starting up again after too long of a hiatus. I’ll see them in Winston-Salem NC on Nov 15th and cannot wait.
For all those who have been fans since “Your Favorite Weapon” click the link, Jesse’s started to incorporate an interesting lyric reversal:

Thanks again for posting the songs

I really really love Brand New, Deja Entendou is immense.
I already added sowing season to my myspace profile, one of those songs you love the first tiem you hear it. Thanks!

Ok, I’m going to wade against the tide here. This is my first introduction to Brand New and, frankly, I hope it’s the last. Maybe other tracks on the album have something I haven’t heard a million times from other heartfelt teen-target-market “artists” but the tracks posted here don’t. We get it guys, you’re a bit sad and a bit angry and all those linkin park feelings, why not express it creatively?
I’m sure it’s a bit different if you’re coming to it from an earlier love, but it just sounded pretty tired to me. And sweet jesus there are some cringe-inducing lyrics going on in those tracks!
October 23rd, 2006 at 3:49 am
neville. brand new express nothing like “those linkin park feelings”. and yeah you’re right you probably do have to listen to their earlier stuff to appreciate them. but their new stuff is immense. i hope for your sake it’s not your last introduction to Brand New, because they’re a hell of alot better than these sell out bands currently around.
thanks to the person who uploaded the demos and the link to sowing season. can’t wait for the new album, and the Uk get it a day earlier which is even better!

For someone with a versatile musical palate, I see tons of tracks and albums from every genre of music, and every ungenre of music. This song totally just revived my love for the emo rock sound. Not that nerdy glasses black hair bullshit, the authentic, real emo sound that I fell in love with about a decade ago. I had been hating on emo for awhile, and all of that diminished after that hook blew up my heart. Yes, I’m already emo again.
It annoys me when people criticize something without knowing what they’re talking about. I’m talking about that Neville dude. Hey man. What you said? That’s kinda like going “Psht, who listens to the Beatles? There’s a million other bands just like them.” Don’t hate, appreciate.
October 23rd, 2006 at 12:39 pm
Long time reader, first time poster from Virginia. Good track, thanks for posting it. I’ve been waiting to hear something new from Brand New for awhile as well.
Also, I had NO idea the Shins leaked, so thank you for posting that. They are easily my favorite band and I was able to get my hands on the album and I must say, it’s incredible.
Keep up the good work.
October 23rd, 2006 at 4:04 pm
reckon anyone’s ever going to get bored of using “brand new brand new” as the title for articles about them?
October 23rd, 2006 at 6:50 pm
That was less of me trying to be clever by saying “Brand New Brand New” and more of me hyperventalating in text form from excitement. Just sayin’.
October 23rd, 2006 at 7:56 pm
Musicman: That analogy doesn’t really work. The Beatles were at least somewhat seminal. A better analogy would be me saying “Psht, who listens to Jet’s new album? There’re a million other bands just like them.” Don’t hate, appreciate? I’d rather straight out say something sucks and move on to good, interesting music instead.
But as I said, this music strikes me as the sort of thing you’d enjoy if you’d picked up the band’s stuff earlier and it’s similar sound evokes all sorts of memories of years gone by - that’s fine but as a new listener I’m afraid I miss out on the personal history with the music and all I’m left with is a humdrum facsimile of music I’ve already been disappointed by elsewhere.
October 23rd, 2006 at 9:16 pm
i feel bad for neville because he wasnt introduced to BN earlier. ive been a BN fan since their earlier music, and quite frankly, their songs are absolute anthems in my opinion. jesse is a great lyricist.
if you want to call it “emo,” thats fine or whatever, but their music bears hardly any resemblence to these bands that have gone huge today because their annoying sound appeals to young teenage girls and kids who have bad taste in music. BN’s music is much more varied and appeals to a different audience. this band isnt about selling out, and if you put their music on the radio, it wouldnt receive a popular reception like some of these new “emo” bands have. this being said, it is unfair to simply push them aside as being similar to all of the rest. they are unique, and should be appreciated for that reason.
October 24th, 2006 at 10:15 am
Thanks for this, and the link to the rest of the demos - I needed a few. But dude, the link for Untitled 8 doesn’t work anymore! You gotta help!
Can’t wait to see Brand New in action again… have to wait until December, but I’m already sitting on my ticket.
Are they emo, or aren’t they? Does it matter? I’m not a fan of lumping things together… I love Brand New for their ability to release varying and interesting albums, with a different style track-to-track. Just like the Matthew Good Band. I recommend the album “Underdogs” to anyone who doesn’t know who I’m talking about.
Cheers. Keep in it.
October 24th, 2006 at 5:01 pm
hey you do know they have 9 untitled tracks riight?? and they’ve been out for like a half a year
October 27th, 2006 at 2:13 pm
Brand new is my favorite band of all time. I was introduced too brand new before they hit mtv and all that, reguardless of hitting mtv i dont care; hell Tool hit MTV. Choosing to be on MTV or not doesnt really mean selling out… Brand new sell out? fuck no, most orignal band to date. Your favorite weapon was a great CD to start off with the strong distortion guitar riffs, with deep angst and anger towards girls; not necessarily teenage problems, but an album that you can keep your mind/depend on for days to come. Deja Entendu i look at it as more of a mature album, theyv’e grown up a bit, with such deep lyrical meaning that can seem to only effect the ones who have been through those types of feelings/situations, reguardless of being through relationships and what not, the music is still very innovative. Ive yet to find a band that compares to them. Taking back sunday had a few hits with their older album “Telll all your friends”; other than that ive yet to find anything that comes close to the originallity of BN. Anyways, i’m very impressed with the new single, i still hear the originallity and the strong distortion, nevertheless the elenquent Deja Entendu, which is my favorite of the two albums.
I had a few questions on trying to get a rip of the CD, ive NOT been able to find it on torrentspy.com/donkeyspy.com/isohunt.com. Of course im going to be buying the album if I rip it off the internet or not, they deserve they’re albums to be bought.. hell I broke Deja Entendu so many times, ive probably bought 6 copies of it. SO if anyone has any type of rip i can get, email me at, ncostel1@kent.edu.. or just post back up on here, i’ll be checking back.
One last thing i wanted to add, im completely amazed that i cant find any of theyre albums on any type of torrent site. Sure, you can find the songs on anytype of Limewire type Kazaa program. Tool did all they could to not have people rip their shit but it still leaked. Anywho, either im a complete dumbass; and im not searching the torrents correctly. Or Brand New does not have any torrent’s which really pisses me off because i want to hear the NEW ALBUM NOW!
October 27th, 2006 at 5:55 pm
the links to download the songs don’t exactly work…and i really want to online sessions…..i can’t wait for an available torrent as well….and, of course…i’m going to buy the album…
-michael
October 27th, 2006 at 8:02 pm
Nicholas Cash - the album hasn’t leaked yet, thus it’s not available anywhere. Michael and everyone else complaining about the broken links, that’s just my shitty hosting service being sketchy, check back in an hour or two.
October 28th, 2006 at 1:55 pm

Hey. I’ve been waiting for this album to be released forever. I listened to Sowing Season on their myspace and I just thought I’d mention how much it resembles “Okay, I Believe You..”. I’ve also listened to “Archers”, “Degausser” , and “Jesus Christ” and it is apparent that “The Devil and God…” will sound very similar to Deja Entendu. There are some rumors that BN has leaked these demos on purpose and they will not actually be on the album, but I’m pretty sure that’s a lot of garbage. No matter what, the new album is going to be incredible. The album art is great, too. Make sure you go out and buy it November 21. The Storm is Coming.
November 9th, 2006 at 10:56 pm
dude this album compared to those songs is opposite of deja, they have in a sense reinvented themselves all over again. Limousine is so amazing, everyone go on www.demonoid.com and search for brand new devil god and download the 6 song sampler pack from there new album! and buy it! there style is UNMATCHED ANYWHERE!
